Community Engagement

The Matawan Aberdeen Public Library’s new Community Engagement Services initiative hopes to build stronger connections between the library and the people it serves. Through inclusive programs, outreach, and local partnerships, MAPL is making library resources more accessible, relevant, and community-driven.

We believe libraries are vital community hubs—places to learn, share ideas, and build relationships. By bringing the library into the community and the community into the library, MAPL continues to grow as a welcoming space for connection, creativity, and lifelong learning.

On December 3, 2025. MAPL's Community Engagement Librarian, Laurie, and Head of Adult Services, Jennifer, joined the community at the Aberdeen tree lighting with candy canes and our library's December holiday and activity calendars. We were so excited to be part of such a fun celebration that included caroling, Mickey and Minnie Mouse, Clydesdales horses, hot chocolate, smores, the lighting of this beautiful tree, and of course, Santa!

On December 16, 2025, MAPL's Community Engagement Librarian, Laurie, and our Director, Kimberly, joined Aberdeen's Menorah lighting to connect with our community. Despite the snow and extreme cold keeping us inside for much of the evening, we handed out plenty of chocolate gelt, December holiday and activity calendars, and cozy hot chocolate-themed bookmarks to children (and adults!). We then braved the cold to witness the beautiful lighting ceremony outside alongside local rabbis, community members, Mayor Tagliarini, and the town council.

MAPL’s Social Worker, James, was able to meet with patrons and community members of all ages at this year’s Aberdeen Day on September 20, 2025. James shared information about his free services available at the library through appointment and drop-in that include things like referrals, support with paperwork, and connections to local providers.

MAPL’s Library Director, Kimberly, attended the Fall Festival at The Learning Experience here in Matawan. She was able to connect with some of our youngest patrons and their parents in order to share with them how to sign up for library cards, as well as how to partake in the myriad of children’s activities that we have each month here at the library.

They handed out monthly activity calendars, brochures about our clubs and electronic resources and apps, and quite a few lollipops and bookmarks

One of MAPL’s Board members, Connie Kelley, and our Director, Kimberly, decorated her appropriately orange car for the Aberdeen PBA’s “Trunk or Treat” that took place on October 19, 2025 at Matawan Regional High School. They handed out candy and bookmarks to over 400 little “ghosts and goblins” that day!

One difficult task for librarians is that sometimes we have to remove or “weed” books from our shelves to make room for new ones coming in. As you can imagine, it pains us to do this, so something that makes us feel better about that process is knowing when those books are going to “good homes”. In October, we invited local teachers to our book giveaway; with a teacher ID and a bag or a box, they were invited to take as many books as they would like for their classrooms.
